Ultraviolet (UV) rays, gravity, the aging process, and lifestyle habits can all take a toll on your skin over time. These factors can affect your skin’s texture, tone, resiliency, and evenness. But with laser skin resurfacing, you don’t have to let your age show. Know what to expect before you go, and don’t hesitate to speak up if you have any questions for the med spa provider.

Consultation

You’ll have a consultation before your laser skin resurfacing appointment. Bring information about your medical history, including current medications, allergies, medical conditions, and prior surgeries. Your provider needs to know about previous skin treatments you may have had, such as prescription medications for acne or chemical peels. Your provider will determine whether you’re a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing and then will give you some pre-treatment instructions to follow.

Preparation

You may be asked to make a few changes to your usual routine for several weeks prior to having laser skin resurfacing. It’s essential to avoid unnecessary sun exposure and to apply sunscreen every two hours, every day. Your med spa provider might also ask you to do the following:

  • Discontinue certain topical products
  • Quit smoking
  • Take any prescribed oral medications
  • Apply special creams or gels

At the start of your appointment, your provider will numb your skin and may administer a sedative to help you stay comfortable. Your skin will be cleansed and you will be given eye protection.

Recovery

Each individual’s recovery process is a little different and depends in part on the specific type of treatment. In most cases, the skin will recover in about one to two weeks. Follow your provider’s aftercare instructions. You may need to apply ointment to support the healing process, and you must apply sunscreen every day. Within the first two weeks, your treated skin will peel, and new skin will form. The pinkness of your skin will linger for several weeks.
